Background
E-Center is a private non-profit agency that administers Head Start services, dedicated to providing early childhood education and support to families. To enhance their facilities, E-Center embarked on a significant project to install two new 60x60 modular buildings. One building serves as the administrative office, while the other accommodates a toddler and pre-kindergarten daycare classroom. These permanent buildings feature custom floor plans tailored to E-Center's specific needs.
Challenge
The project faced several challenges, primarily related to the site's extremely rocky soil, which complicated the pit set installation process. Additionally, E-Center experienced significant delays in getting power to the site, as the utility company took an extended period to bring power to the buildings. Another complication arose from the staggered timeline of the buildings' installations; the first building was ordered early in 2022, while the second followed later in the year, creating coordination challenges.
Solution
Mobile Modular provided a comprehensive solution to address these challenges. Despite the rocky soil, Mobile Modular successfully performed excavation and constructed a retaining wall, ensuring a stable foundation for the buildings. The pit set installation eliminated the need for ramps, streamlining the access to the buildings.
To overcome the power delay, Mobile Modular coordinated closely with E-Center and the electric provider, ensuring that all necessary preparations were in place once the power was available. This proactive approach minimized further delays and facilitated a smoother transition to full operation.
Jodie Keller, the Headstart Program Officer, and Tom Berry, the Facilities Manager, were instrumental in the project's success. Jodie Keller had the vision for the development, and Tom Berry coordinated the construction efforts, acting as their own general contractor to manage the project meticulously.
Results
E-Center's innovative approach extended beyond the new modular buildings. They repurposed the historic Bird Street Elementary School, which they had purchased after it faced multiple reconstructions and eventual closure. This site now houses the new modular structures, blending history with modern functionality.
Through determination and collaboration, E-Center successfully enhanced their administrative and daycare facilities, providing a supportive environment for staff and young children alike. The new modular buildings stand as a testament to E-Center's commitment to innovation and quality service delivery.
