The Challenge
California’s homeless problem isn’t easily solved, but some cities have taken measures to provide the homeless some relief. Sacramento’s homeless now have an opportunity to get shelter, food, behavioral health services, job placement, and housing assistance at the 175-unit Stockton Avenue Safe Stay Community at 6810 Stockton Blvd. The project took five months to complete and opened in December 2024.
One standout feature of this community: If the homeless person is approved as a resident of the shelter, that person’s pets are welcome at the shelter as well.
The project was a collaboration of The State of California with the supervision of contractor SJ Amoroso and several subcontractors to address homelessness in Sacramento. This is the first homeless community of its kind in Sacramento. The goal is to reform each person who stays in the community into a productive citizen with employment, so they can mainstream into housing they secure for themselves.
What We Accomplished
To complement the 175 separate “tiny sleeping (modular) cabins” (most are 8’ x 9’) provided by another manufacturer, Mobile Modular constructed the following custom buildings using “Human-Centered Design” (HCD) which is briefly described as creating spaces that are intuitive and useful to a diverse range of people:
Modular was deemed the best solution to provide living space in a relatively short amount of time.
